The Oracle: life core- chapter 2

Ira-
He stood as a dark silhouette against a backdrop of wild flames and bellowing smoke. The putrid smell of burning flesh hung heavy in the air as fire consumed the bodies piled at his feet. Tugging up the collar of his long coat he turned as if to leave but stopped to look up. Eyes as cold and lifeless as emeralds cut straight in to me and the smirk that formed on his lips made his otherwise handsome face seem almost cruel. When he spoke, it was with a mocking tone.
            “Can I help you?”
Gasping I jerked from dream to reality. Heart racing, I sat up and searched the darkness of my room for any sign of another’s presence but of course found nothing. The only sounds to be heard were that of the

Ariel

When I arrived at the garishly decorated apartment, no one noticed but the dog laying at its master’s feet. Sense that was the whole point of me sneaking in I didn’t hold it against them, but it was disappointing. All it took was a mental push and the hound went back to ignoring people in general and I went back to being invisible. I leaned against the wall and watched the proceedings for a time, trying to get a feel for the boss of the group.

Largely known on the streets as Serpent, he was arrogant, but rightly so. As one of the most powerful gang leaders of Old York, he was allowed to be arrogant. It was obvious he liked to indulge himself with expensive things. He also tended to insult, threaten, or do a combination of both to anyone unlucky enough to catch his attention.

    He was also pudgy.

I don’t like pudgy people, they tended to be obnoxious and when the man finely did notice me he proved too be exactly that.

“Ah, there he is. The magician prince I’ve hear so much about” He said, smiling in a way that wasn’t vary welcoming. If anything, it was a warning.

“I ‘ve been waiting for you” the way he said it made it clear he didn’t often have to wait for anything. He made a gestured for me to step forward and continued. I stayed where I was leveling a steady stare at him and waited for him to finish.  “I Have a very specific job offer that no one else seems to be able to accomplish.”

    I said nothing

“I assume there is no need to tell you what will happen if you don’t succeed.” He said shooting a meaning full glance at a man hiding in the shadows and cuddling his mangled arm.

Rather than replying, I studied the guy with the broken arm and contemplated wither or not I really wanted to deal with the brat. We both knew it was an idle threat, considering the man he’d sent for me had yet finished the task, but I don’t think he knew that. And anyway, it was just words to show off in front of his guests, lucky for him; I didn’t take much pride in my ego.

    “Well?” Serpent prodded.

Not bothering to look at him I spoke to the abused man.

    “You alright mate?”

The man shot a fearful look at his leader but gave me a stiff nod.

“You can socialize later, Magician, right now we’re doing business.” Despite the warning in the Serpents voice I continued to ignore him and could practically feel the anger coming from his direction.

“there’s a lady in down town Old York she uses old magic healing methods but she’s decently cheap. You might want to check her out.”

“Magician are you interested in my offer, or should- “

“I’ll do it” I interrupted and shoved off the wall.

“that’s it, not going to establish insurance for payment?” he sounded suspicious but amused as he watched me select an apple from the center piece of the long table in the center of the room, but the irritated twitch of eye told me he was close to losing control.

“Oh, you’ll pay” I told inspecting the apple before taking a large bite. “just not with money.” Chewing loudly because I could tell it irritated him more than he already was, “I want a favor”

“A favor?” his eye brows rose in skepticism.

    I shrugged.

“More like a promise, but same difference.”

“That’s it?” he asked, and I smiled grimly at him.

They were always so stupid when it came down to it. I wondered when they would get enough sense to warn each other about me. Then again, maybe they just didn’t want it getting around that they feared “the boy” who was young enough to be the grandson of half of them and did “Fancy tricks”. Not that I was complaining. It had been hard enough finding an in to that place, it would have been imposable if the idiot hadn’t wanted to hire me.  He studied me for a moment longer before finally…

“Very well” he agreed, and my smile widened.

    He really was a fool.

“Then it’s a deal. A favor, in return for my services.…” as I spoke wisps of energy formed around him, winding around his arms, neck, and torso. The doubt that crept across his face told me he could see them, but the wisps were already thickening in to ropes that twisted tighten around him. His Eyes widened and beads of sweat formed on his forehead when the ropes snapped tight, chocking off the strangled noise’s he made as he struggled against the bonds, fear written across his face. “this I swear and so, it be” the bonds brightened with searing heat branding his body, and his eyes bulged with pain he could not express. When the spell released its hold on him he gasped Sweat trickled down his brow as his chest heaved.

    That was days ago

I had learned early on that men in his position didn’t feel the need to keep their promises, but He would find it difficult to refuse anything I asked of him. I don’t imagine he would be very happy with what I had done, but I didn’t care; I didn’t like him.

Now I watch as the fire runs flaming fingers over limbs and faces, eating the flesh and bone at its mercy. It was a greed thing and covetous too, but it would die out soon enough. When it did, it would do its job of dispersing the essence it was currently stealing from the dead. Turning away from the burning pile I began to head back toward the stone building that only hours before had housed the living. I dreaded returning to it, but I had my own job to do.

To say I regret killing these people would be lying. That’s not to say I wanted to either. It’s just some people need to die, it’s part of my job to make sure they do so.

The feeling of someone watching makes me pause. Looking up I searched for the source of my discomfort. I could sense the spirit of something, no, someone hovering in front of me. Reaching out around me and pulled a barrier down over my vision and waited for my eyes to adjust to the sudden loss of physical light and focused on the form before me.

It was women, that much I could tell, but she was made completely of light. Nothing about her told of age or youth, she was simply a blank slate shaped as a human. The only distinguishing features she possessed were the blinding bright globes that she had in place of eyes. I had seen spirits before but this one was more corporal then any had a right to be. I had the urge to reach out and touch her, to see if she felt as real as she looked.

Instead I cocked my head slightly and smirked.

            “can I help you?”

The figure gasped as if breathing was an enormous task and whispered a single world

             “Yes.”

I frowned and looked closer but no matter how hard I searched I saw no hint of an expression.

            “How?”

            “Find me.”

There was a flicker, then a flash and just like that, she was gone.

    …..

Music loud enough for me to feel an oncoming headache, vibrates through the floor and up my legs when I step through the door to one place I might consider home. Closing the token door behind me, I glance at the calendar hanging next to the coat rack and I swore under my breath. Eight days had gone by. I was only supposed to be gone a week.

Nina was going to have a fit.

Stealing myself for the inevitable, I walk in to the living room where I am greeted by the sight of a little girl, jumping on a couch large enough to take up almost a quarter of the room. I watch for a few seconds as she wildly waves her arms around and kicks out in a crazy dance to the song booming through the house. I groan inwardly when I see she has once again changed the strange arrangement of colors in her hair. It is now bright pink with yellow splotches, and I almost wish she had left it the neon blue it was before.

    Almost.

Last time she hacked more than half of it off.

Walking across the room to the boom box against the wall I pull the plug than watch as the sudden silence makes her spin around and she lets out a yelp when her foot slips sending her crashing to the floor. Quickly popping back up the she turns to glare at me.

    “dude, you killed my jam!”

“And here I was expecting I nice warm welcome home. Guess we both won’t be getting what we want.”  She huffs but gets up and crosses the room to wrap her small arms around my waist.

“Your late” she mumbles in to my shirt.

“I know, sweetheart. I had to take care of a couple things before heading back.” I say ruffling the pink fuzz on her head.  She pulls back to look up at me, her face furrowed into an angry scowl.

“You promised you would take me out for my birthday. That was two days ago, Rea.” She accuses, making me wince. I didn’t bother telling her It was easy to lose track of what day it is when you’re constantly changing time zones.

“how about I take you tomorrow”

    “What’s wrong with today?”

“I’ve got some things to finish up so I ’ll be leaving in a couple hours, but I’ll be back in the mourning.”

“What! Why?” she exclaims, stepping away from me with tears in her eyes. “You just got back, you can’t leave!

    “Nina.” I sighed.

“No!” she yelled, angerly shoving away from me “don’t you ‘Nina’ me. This is third time in the row. Why can’t it wait just this once?” the tears spilled over, but she brushed them away. “your never around anymore”

    “I can’t-”

“Of course, you can’t you, you’re too busy saving the world.” She shouted then ran out the room and down the hall. A second later I hear her bedroom door slam.

I wanted to go to her and make her understand but knowing she would need time to cool off, so I started on dinner instead. She was still cooling off when I finished making spaghetti and didn’t answer when I called her for dinner. I ate in silence, but Nina’s mood had seeped into my own and stole my appetite. Unable to force anything down I put most of it way but left a bowl on the counter. After I finish cleaning the kitchen I grabbed a small package from one of the pockets my jacket.  Taking it with me I when down the hall and knocked on Nina’s door.

    She didn’t.

“I’ve got to go soon, but I left some dinner on the counter for you.”

    Still no response.

Carefully cracked open the door, I peered in. Nina was asleep on her bed cuddled up next the enormous stuffed bear I got her after the first time I had to leave her alone.  Tear stains streaked her little face making my heart squeezed with regret. Silently, I entered the room and walked over to her bed. Leaning over I placed a kiss on her forehead and set the small package next to her hand.

    “Happy birthday kiddo” I whispered.
